For those of you who may not know me all that well, I enjoy making decisions in the moment. It took me all of 5 minutes to decide to go to graduate school in London instead of law school in California. An innocent lunch with my Mom and her friend when I was 23 years old inspired me to buy a one-way ticket from San Diego to DC to try my hand working in the international non-profit sector. When I bought a condo it was because I realized I had been paying rent for close to a decade and that just annoyed me to no end.
I love spontaneity. Sometimes it’s good to look around at your surroundings and instead of paying attention to your head going with your gut. Now I’m not saying that every decision you make is the best one but it does guarantee surprises along the way. Take today for example.
Today I had one goal and one goal only – to buy a winter coat for my friend’s wedding in Ohio next week because I had either donated or gotten rid of all of mine when I moved back to San Diego. Who needs a winter coat when the average temperature hovers in the high 60s to low 70s throughout the year? Well turns out I probably should have kept one. After successfully purchasing my new coat I decided to meander around downtown looking at a few boutiques. There’s this one that I absolutely love aptly named A Style Concierge. It has a great selection of funky, mod style clothing and a small salon on the second floor overlooking the boutique. Well it had been a few months since my last cut and they had an opening. Drum roll spontaneous decision-making time.
As I was sitting there sipping my wine and enjoying a mix of Taylor Swift, Copeland, and Mute Math playing over the speakers I realized I was tired of my hairstyle. Don’t get me wrong I love my curls but I have been very conservative with my style. I did chop my hair off to an inch back in college, but that was for a good cause, and growing it out left a permanent scar that has kept me from trying anything remotely short since. The stylist, and new awesome buddy Nicole Shelton, had an awesome shaved triangle with her sleek blonde hair and mild punk rocker vibe. I have always loved the triangle style but have never dared try it myself. As we were gabbing over our love of the Rocky Horror Picture Show and embarrassing romantic comedies, like the Princess Diaries, I realized I wasn’t getting any younger and if I was ever going to give the style a try might as well now. Cue the clippers.
First we had to decide on the size of triangle that was going to get buzzed into my head. We went with a medium size one on the side of my head that always has more hair, twisting it off and joking that that single chunk of my hair could easily cover an entire head if necessary. My only requirement was that it could be hidden by the rest of hair and also while in a ponytail; so we did leave a small section of long hair along the front side. I will admit a brief twinge of doubt did start to creep up my spine but I shook it off because I was already really starting to like the look in the mirror. With one quick snip that nice chunk of my hair was gone and my scalp instantly felt cool. I was giddy with excitement and we both couldn’t stop laughing.
After she cleaned it up and defined the lines I was good to go and totally in love with my new style. It’s going to take a new type of maintenance I am not used to but they were happy to offer me free clean-ups as needed. I’m not sure how long this style will last but it is a statement piece that really does speak to my try anything once attitude. Honestly, since I have such thick hair all I need is for it to grow out a few inches and it will disappear with the masses. Until then I will try to do my best to rock the look on some days and on others I can easily hide it by flipping my hair back over to the other side.
Terrific article! That is the kind of information that are supposed to be shared around the net.
